Mongoya proud despite Kruger United’s opening-day defeat to Chiefs

by Dzudzie Faith Netshisaulu

Kruger United coach Abram Mongoya said he was proud of his players despite their 3-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in their Betway Premiership opener at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening.

The newly promoted side were playing their first match in topflight football after winning promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season. They were handed a difficult introduction against one of South Africa’s biggest clubs, but Mongoya felt there were encouraging signs in the performance.

Chiefs took an early lead through Flavio Silva, but Kruger United responded before halftime when Khethukuthula Ndlovu scored to make it 1-1. The visitors regained control after the break, with substitute Wandile Duba scoring twice to seal the win for Amakhosi.

Speaking after the match, Mongoya said his players showed bravery and periods of control once they had settled into the contest.

“It was a good performance and a good display from the boys,” Mongoya said. “They were brave enough to impose our game plan and our model against a big rival like Chiefs. For me, I am proud of the boys.”

Mongoya admitted Kruger United started slowly, particularly in the opening 15 minutes, but felt his side improved as the game progressed. He said Chiefs’ tactical adjustment in build-up play made it harder for Kruger to press, especially when the visitors shifted into a back three involving Reeve Frosler and Miguel Inacio.

“We started on the back foot in the first 14 to 15 minutes, but once we settled, we were able to pin Chiefs back and play through or around their press,” Mongoya said. “When they changed their structure, it became slightly difficult for us to press, but once we figured it out, we looked better again.”

Kruger United will now turn their attention to their next Betway Premiership assignment against Marumo Gallants at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on 11 August, with kick-off scheduled for 19h30.
