Mamelodi Sundowns ended Orlando Pirates’ four-year reign as MTN8 champions with a convincing 2–0 victory in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.
Goals from Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners secured the trophy for the Brazilians, who denied the Buccaneers an unprecedented fifth consecutive MTN8 title.
Sundowns made an early statement when Mokoena opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing from close range after a clever backheel assist from Thabang Matuludi.
The early breakthrough gave Sundowns control of the contest, although Pirates remained competitive and searched for a way back into the match.
The Buccaneers created opportunities to equalise, but Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams proved decisive when Pirates were awarded a penalty in the second half. Williams produced a crucial save to deny Ghampani Lungu, preserving Sundowns’ narrow advantage and shifting the momentum in their favour.

Pirates continued to push for an equaliser, but Sundowns remained disciplined defensively and frustrated their opponents’ attempts to break through.
The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time when Rayners converted a penalty to make it 2–0, sealing the victory and sparking celebrations among the Sundowns players and supporters.
The triumph marked Sundowns’ fifth MTN8 title and their first success in the competition since 2021. It also brought Pirates’ impressive run of four successive MTN8 championships to an end.
For Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, the victory delivered domestic silverware and a significant result against one of the club’s principal rivals. The Brazilians’ combination of early attacking intent, defensive organisation and Williams’ penalty save proved instrumental in securing the trophy.
For Pirates, the defeat ended hopes of extending their remarkable dominance of the competition, while Sundowns celebrated their return to the top of the MTN8 podium.
The final provided a fitting contest between two of South African football’s leading clubs, with Sundowns ultimately converting their key opportunities to emerge as 2026 MTN8 champions.
