South African football returns to centre stage this weekend as the much-anticipated MTN8 tournament officially launches the 2026/27 domestic season, promising another month of high-intensity knockout football featuring the country’s elite clubs.
The Premier Soccer League will officially launch the tournament tonight at the SuperSport Studios in Randburg at 18:30pm.
Kicking off on Saturday, 8 August, the prestigious competition brings together the top eight finishers from the 2025/26 Betway Premiership in what has become one of the most anticipated tournaments on the local football calendar. With lucrative prize money, fierce rivalries and silverware at stake from the opening whistle, the MTN8 once again signals the beginning of another exciting domestic campaign.
This year’s edition, however, carries even greater significance.
All eyes will be firmly fixed on Orlando Pirates, who enter the tournament as defending champions and stand on the brink of creating South African football history. The Buccaneers are chasing an unprecedented fifth consecutive MTN8 title—an achievement that would cement their status as the most dominant team in the modern era of the competition.

Having lifted the trophy in four successive seasons, Pirates have turned the MTN8 into their own stage, consistently producing disciplined, entertaining football under immense pressure. Another triumph would not only extend their remarkable dominance but also establish a new benchmark for success in South African knockout football.
Their pursuit of history ensures they will begin the tournament with the weight of expectation firmly on their shoulders.
But while Pirates are the headline act, several rivals will be determined to end their reign.
League champions Mamelodi Sundowns once again boast one of the strongest squads in the country and will be eager to translate their league consistency into MTN8 success. Stellenbosch FC continue to grow into one of South Africa’s most competitive clubs, while Sekhukhune United have established themselves as genuine contenders capable of upsetting the traditional powerhouses.
The remaining qualifiers will also believe that the unpredictable nature of knockout football offers every club an opportunity to challenge for the first major trophy of the new season.
Unlike a league campaign, the MTN8 leaves no room for error. Every match is effectively a final, where tactical discipline, composure and individual brilliance can determine who advances and who begins the season in disappointment.
The tournament’s reputation has been built on dramatic late goals, penalty shoot-outs, giant-killing performances and unforgettable moments that have captured the imagination of supporters across the country. From packed stadiums and colourful supporter displays to intense rivalries between South Africa’s biggest clubs, the MTN8 consistently delivers some of the season’s most memorable football.
As anticipation builds ahead of the opening fixtures, excitement is growing across the country. Supporters are expected to fill stadiums, while millions more will follow every moment as the race for the first silverware of the 2026/27 season begins.
With history waiting to be written, fierce rivalries set to be renewed and eight of South Africa’s best teams ready to battle for glory, the MTN8 once again promises to deliver everything football fans have come to expect—drama, passion, unforgettable moments and the crowning of a champion.
