Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as two of South Africa’s biggest clubs produced a fiercely contested encounter in the early stages of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.

The result ended Chiefs’ perfect start to the league campaign but extended their unbeaten run and underlined the progress being made under head coach Fernando da Cruz. For Sundowns, the draw represented a valuable point away from home against a Chiefs side that entered the match with plenty of confidence after winning their opening two league fixtures.

Playing in front of a passionate FNB Stadium crowd, Amakhosi showed little sign of being intimidated by the Tshwane outfit, the home side approached the match with intensity and looked determined to make the most of their early-season momentum.

Their pressure eventually paid off when new signing Langelihle Phili found the breakthrough, sending the home supporters into celebration and giving Chiefs a deserved lead in the 63rd minute.

Sundowns, however, remained composed and clapped back in the 7th minute with an equaliser from Cassius Mailula.

The equaliser changed the momentum of the match, with both sides sensing an opportunity to claim all three points.

Chiefs continued to threaten in front of their home crowd, while Sundowns used their technical quality and experience to control periods of possession. Neither side, though, could find the decisive second goal, with the matching ending in a 1-1 draw.

For the Glamour Boys, this result is testament to the hard work they have been showing in training and in their opening matches, meanwhile, for the Brazillians, it is two points dropped and dent in their journey to reclaim the top spot in the league.

While it is still early days to call it, the title race is already taking shape, and all Betway Premiership clubs will want to collect as many points as possible in the first half of the league.
